Biography

Yan Xu is the Vice President of The George Washington University Student Association. He was elected Vice President after two years of service in the Student Association, having served as a First-Year Undergraduate Senator and Undergraduate-at-Large Senator in the 2020-2021 term and as a Senator representing the undergraduate division at the Elliott School of International Affairs in the 2021-2022 term. Vice President Xu served as the Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Financial Services and Allocations in the 2021-2022 term. 

 

Yan, from Harbin, China, is a first-generation, international, third-year undergraduate student double majoring in International Affairs at the Elliott School of International Affairs and International Business at the School of Business, with a minor in Economics at the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.

 

Vice President Xu has been recognized for his work in standardizing financial processes, his expertise in the university governing system and finance rules and policies, and his participation in the Finance Committee and New Constitution Task Force.​ During his tenure as the Finance Committee Chairperson, he led the committee to manage and allocate over 1.5 million dollars of the Student Body Fund. He also provided student organization financial officers with resources and handbooks to assist them in applying for funding. Under his leadership, the Student Association allocated $300,000 in additional funding because of the improved Student Association's accounting and financing procedures.

 

Vice President Xu also established a strong relationship with the university administration and staff. He participated in the Code of Academic Integrity Review Committee which reviewed and proposed amendments to the Code of Academic Integrity. Such revisions were adopted by the Student Association and the Faculty Senate. He has also participated in other student panels that serve as consultants to university officials. In addition, he participated in several interviews for new hires for university positions to ensure that student voices are heard and represented in these processes.

Yan likes to travel whenever possible, and he often hits his head on various things on public transportation. He also enjoys going out with friends for tea, coffee, a nice meal, or a good dinner. Open to recommendations for new things to try!
